Asbestos removal process

Blog

Asbestos was used back in the 1980s to build homes, schools and commercial buildings. One of the key reasons for its use was that it was fireproof among other benefits like the fact that it was cheap and offered insulating abilities. However, researchers later found that when it was slightly disturbed, asbestos released mineral fibres that were linked to severe health conditions. If you are living in a house that was built back in the 1980s, there is a likelihood that it contains asbestos somewhere in the roof shingles, the furnace or the insulation system. Fortunately, there are trained professionals that deal with asbestos removal, and below is an explained process on how to deal with it.

Asbestos inspection

Even if asbestos is considered a durable and heat-resistant mineral, it's always a good idea that you call in an inspector to check your targeted areas before performing any renovations in your house. The renovation area, even if a crumbling or cracked wall, could result in damage to the asbestos material. A certified asbestos inspector takes samples and makes a visual inspection of the suspected materials which are later tested for contaminations. This helps to prevent the release of dangerous fibres into the air, hence protecting your family members as well as the workers involved in the renovation.

Finding the right asbestos removal contractors

In every state, there are strict laws that govern how asbestos removal should be conducted due to its dangers if exposed to the environment. It involves a certification process that one must go through and is overseen by the air quality board. Besides, one is also required to go through training that is EPA approved and to pass a certification examination. Due to this reason, the state agencies that take into account one's credibility and certification process remain the best source for finding qualified contractors.

Clean-up process

Once you have found the right contractor to do the job, the process can now be further undertaken to ensure that the asbestos mineral is handled the right way. Before any work begins, you should receive a written contract that contains the company details including the clean-up process and rules they must abide by. The renovation section should be marked as hazardous, and a plastic sheet should be used to seal it off from the rest of the house. The workers involved should ensure that they wear protective masks and avoid breaking the material into smaller pieces, as this would release toxins in the air. Besides, the waste products should be sprayed wet to prevent broken fibres from escaping to the surrounding environment.
